Procurement by the MSF Amsterdam Procurement Unit covers the entire process from receiving international orders from MSF Operational Centre Amsterdam (MSF OCA) field projects and ordering goods from suppliers, to receiving those goods and transporting them to the project countries. In order to support MSF's field projects in line with MSF's humanitarian mission, the MSF Amsterdam Procurement Unit applies criteria to products and supply chain, and to suppliers. The importance and weighting of our criteria may shift in relation to specific contexts such as emergencies.
Criteria for products and supply chain
In general, the quality of the products MSF purchases is safeguarded by the joint input of MSF's product specialists and tactical procurement officers. Criteria cover the following areas:
- Quality of medical products (including drugs and specialized food)
- Quality of non-medical products
- Shelf life
- Delivery lead time
Criteria for suppliers
The MSF Amsterdam Procurement Unit currently deals with more than 150 suppliers, together supplying around 4,800 items. The number of items sourced from one supplier can vary from one to many. In general MSF asks its suppliers, both new and existing, to meet a list of requirements.
